Korean cuisine is one of the latest things in the American food scene. Most people don't have the time or money to jump on a plane, and experience authentic Korean food from its birthplace. However, I have found a cheap way to visit South Korea, without even leaving the country.
For those in Tallahassee interested in Korean food, visit Korean BBQ & More. It's a quaint, little restaurant, that looks like it was just plucked from a small town in South Korea.
When you walk in, you can immediately see where the dining area ends. It definitely gets crowded with its small size. Although it is small with limited seating, it gives off a rather cozy and warm atmosphere. Korean paintings and artwork dot the walls.
In the front, near the window, various drinks are available. Water and tea are included with your meal, but soft drinks are an extra cost.
In the back, there is a small buffet of kimchi, spicy bean sprouts, miso soup, and kimchi soup. These sides and soups are included with your meal.
The menu is rather short, and straight-forward, but it is rather authentic for being located in Tallahassee. Some of the meals include Korean pork, Korean chicken, rice medley, hot beef soup, and dumpling soup. These meals are also very affordable.
The first time I visited the restaurant, I ordered the rice medley, and added beef to it. It had many ingredients such as rice, red bell pepper, spinach, carrots, and more.
It's one of the more colorful dishes of Korean cuisine. It reminded me of a rainbow, when I first got it. Rice laid underneath, while an egg was placed on top. The rest of the ingredients were placed around the egg, creating a circle.
For smell, there was no strong scent. If you got up close, maybe you could smell a sweet scent.
The taste was also slightly sweet. However, the freshness of the vegetables was more noticeable, even more than the beef.
I mixed up all the ingredients, and I put on some of the spicy sauce I was given. The sauce definitely gave it the kick it needed. Still, the dish was not super exciting.
This meal was cooked/made perfectly fine. However, I don't think I'm a big fan of this meal, in general, no matter where it's made. If you're interested in the meal, don't let my opinion prevent you from enjoying it. Everyone has different tastes.
I would recommend this meal to anyone who wants to try a vegetable dish, but with a twist. Although this meal comes with spicy sauce, it still isn't considered to be spicy. A friend of mine, who can't handle spice, has gotten this meal before, and loved it!
For my second time there, I ordered the hot beef soup, which came with a side of rice. The soup had many ingredients like glass noodles, shredded beef, mushrooms, egg, green onion, and plenty of spice.
When it comes to presentation, I could definitely tell that this soup was spicy because the red color was so visible. In the middle, there was a "mountain" of shredded beef and large mushrooms, topped off with green onion.
Not only did it look spicy, but it smelled like it too. I personally didn't find the smell overpowering, but I know people who would disagree.
For taste, it lived up to its spicy expectations. However, it was also salty due to the mushrooms. The beef was very tender and light. It got a little messy with slurping the noodles, but they added a uniqueness to the dish.
My favorite thing was putting beef and mushrooms on rice, and eating it as it was. It almost seemed like you were getting two meals in one.
To sum up my experience, I felt like I was transported to South Korea. The dish was like a hearty vegetable soup, that you would have in a quaint, little restaurant in winter. It was spicy, salty, meaty, and simply delicious.
I recommend this dish to any spice lover who wants two meals in one!
It doesn't matter if you like spicy food or hate it, the Korean BBQ & More restaurant has dishes that can appeal to both kinds of people. It offers Korean food at a great, affordable price, and creates an atmosphere that should belong in Korea. Visit it, and you won't regret it!
